Paperback Description

Sit at the foot of a native elder and listen as great wisdom of days long past is passed down. In The Four Agreements shamanic teacher and healer Don Miguel Ruiz exposes self-limiting beliefs and presents a simple yet effective code of personal conduct learned from his Toltec ancestors. Full of grace and simple truth, this handsomely designed book makes a lovely gift for anyone making an elementary change in life, and it reads in a voice that you would expect from an indigenous shaman. The four agreements are these: Be impeccable with your word. Don't take anything personally. Don't make assumptions. Always do your best. It's the how and why one should do these things that make The Four Agreements worth reading and remembering. --P. Randall Cohan

Reviews From Our Customers

NONSENSE ! ! !

What a load of nonsensical mumbo-jumbo feel-goodism! If you look at some of the things he actually says, you wonder how the book could be so popular. True, once in a while, he wanders in from the wilderness to make a useful statement or even offer sound advice. But his thought processes are nonsensical.

An example from p.54: "Sometimes you hear a voice in your mind, and you may wonder where it came from. This voice may have come from ANOTHER REALITY in which there are LIVING BEINGS very similar to the human mind." (my emphasis)

And on p.26 he quotes from the Bible, John 1:1, and then misinterprets the meaning of "Word" from that context, and goes on from there to... wherever, it matters not.

There may be some nuggets, but I couldn't stand trying to pluck them out of the morass of his Toltec-speak nonsense.

Inspiring Words

In my opinion, The Four Agreements can best be described as a sweet book.
Don Miguel Ruiz really seems to have captured ideas that have worked to
shift his life dramatically and communicates them with love and a true
concern for the reader. His intentions are to serve humanity and his book
demonstrates that he truly cares about people. If you've never been exposed
to the ideas of becoming aware of how your mind operates, or how there is an
agreement in the world among people that it is ok to be miserable, this book
will be a huge eye-opener for you in showing you that you do not have to be
part of that agreement. If you have been searching for something more
fulfilling, it is a great reminder of what is important and how we waste our
time being either Judges or Victims of our own behavior and that life does
not have to be that way. In either case, it is an easy, enlightening read
with something for everyone to enjoy. As a companion to this book, I
strongly recommend "Working On Yourself Doesn't Work" by Ariel and Shya
Kane. Their book is written in a more modern and practical style and has
very pragmatic ideas about how to live a very satisfying life. I speak from
experience because both books have had a profoundly positive impact on my
enjoyment of living. If you want things in your life to work well,
one or both of these books should have the effect you've been looking for.

Small book with 4 simple great ideas

After I read this book, I made up my mind to put the principles into action. My family and friends have noticed a big difference in my disposition. I should add that another book, Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self showed me how to put these four principles to work. I recommend both of these books if you want to live your life from the inside out.
