| Paperback Description The mother sings to her sleeping baby: "I'll love you forever / I'll love you for always / As long as I'm living / My baby you'll be." She still sings the same song when her baby has turned into a fractious 2-year-old, a slovenly 9-year-old, and then a raucous teen. So far so ordinary--but this is one persistent lady. When her son grows up and leaves home, she takes to driving across town with a ladder on the car roof, climbing through her grown son's window, and rocking the sleeping man in the same way. Then, inevitably, the day comes when she's too old and sick to hold him, and the roles are at last reversed. Each stage is illustrated by one of Sheila McGraw's comic and yet poignant pastels. (Ages 4 to 8) --Richard Farr |
| Reviews From Our Customers
Munsch magic Robert Munsch is one of the best writers of books for young children. Many of his books are quite funny. This one is not, however. Instead it is sweet and poignant. I read this to my children when they were small, and now I read it to my students. The verse of the song, "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always..." is repeated throughout the story. Children will soon be singing along. What I think kids like most about this story is how it comes full circle. First the mother sings to her son, unconditionally, even when she "feels like she's in a zoo!" At the end the son sings to his feeble old mother.
Be prepared with tissue because this one's a tear-jerker!
A Children's Book That Can Influence Lives! If you have a young daughter or granddaughter, buy this book for them. It just might become their favorite book of all time. I've now met two high school aged girls who told me this was their favorite book. These were both girls who became very family orientated. It's rare to find such a simple children's book that has the ability to make such a lasting impact on lives.
A very good and sad book-five stars for its message Truthfully, I rarely read this book to my son because it makes me so sad and I cry. Although I think it is a must have for a children's library adults will not have an easy time reading this book. My four year old son likes this book and he doesn't process it the same way as I do. He refers to it as, "the book that makes Mommy sad." P.S. (I also can barely read the Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein to him for the same exact reasons. Go ahead and buy the book but have a bunch of tissues ready.) |
