Outstanding
Admittedly, this book is for those that appreciate craftsmanship, solitude, and Alaska. Given one or more of the aforementioned criteria catches your attention, then this book will be at least a "4" for you.
I have never read a book (please note: I have probably only completely read a total of 15 books in my 40 plus years as I am persnickity about my content) where the photograpy adds so much to the content.
I have loaned (will never get it back so I am ordering 3 more.. this is a first... having more than one copy of a book) to numerous work colleagues and they all have come back with, "Wow"... I am ready to go.
Vivid and alluring--I'm surprized Alaska isn't full
The pictures in this book don't do justice to the word pictures Sam Keith creates for the reader. You can almost feel the frost on your face, the wind whistling through the trees and the animals up close. It reminds me of Delbert Abbotts adventure during Desert Storm in his book Courage And Cowardice. Both men decribe their adventure with such realism that the reader is left living the adventure next to them. A wonderful book. I highly recommend it.
Perfect match for the PBS documentary
(...) he does not do much talking or sharing what's going on in his head. The book gives you that insight. Its very much a journal of his first years living in Alaska. I wondered what he did after the cabin was built, and the books shares the adventures he went on, wildlife he witnessed, and his amazing ability to live off the land with minimal supplies. If you were fascinated by the show, you will really appreciate this book.
