This book is an absolutely invaluable resource for those tempted to shoot or otherwise terminate their dogs, and, as other reviewers note, its recommendations are effective with other forms of mammalian life, as well. Had this book been available earlier, it might have saved my brother considerable trouble with the law enforcement personnel in Bacon County, Georgia.
Attention all Salespeople: Ignore the Title; Buy the Book!
"Why in the world is Mr. Gay reviewing a dog training book? I thought he was a world-famous sales trainer!" - - - At least that's what I was told one of my newer Corporate Team Members said when she looked over my shoulder and saw the beginnings of this review.)
Well, here's why:
Several years ago, Stephen Douglas Williford (good personal friend/solid business associate/powerful writer) sent me my first copy of "Don't Shoot the Dog" (I've since "been through" dozens of them [read stolen!]). And Steve also included a note saying, "This book will solve many of the problems you and all other business owners, presidents, sales managers & sales trainers encounter on a daily basis!" And was he ever right!
In fact, ever since my first reading of the book, I've maintained that every single baby should be born with "Don't Shoot the Dog" tied around it's ankle - - - the "Operator's Manual," if you will.
While Karen may have originally had dogs, seals & dolphins in mind when she wrote it, and although I have used it to "shape the behavior" of all of our dogs/cats/parrots/rabbits/guinea pigs over the years, the real monetary payoff has come from improved "relationships" (read performance) with my salespeople/ Corporate Team Members/clients/customers/children/wife (Please, I'm begging you! Don't tell Gigi I said that! [She doesn't yet know what's happened to her!]).
So anyway (I'm starting to ramble), if you want to know how the clients/customers of "The Closers" sales training series and I make so many more sales than most salespeople ever do, "Don't Shoot the Dog" is filled with some of the major secrets we've been quietly using for years. So "quietly," in fact, that I wouldn't have told you about it until just the last 15 years or so - - - after my close friends and I had all we needed!
I repeat: It's a "5 Star" (*****) sales training book, regardless of the title!
Note: You may have noticed that all of my book reviews carry "5 Star" ratings (*****). But that's not the sign of a "soft reviewer." I only review books to which I can honestly give a "5 Star" rating. You may assume, therefore, that any sales training/self-improvement book without my "5 Star" rating is either less than "5 Star," or I simply haven't gotten to it yet . . . and there are certainly plenty of those!
A book we can't afford not to read.
I've been in management 29 years with over 1000 employees. I wish I had read this much earlier in my work life. This book will help you grow your employees and give them a better competitive edge; will save your marriage; and will let your teenages win you over to their side. Buy it, read it, read it again, and again.
