Mass Market Paperback Description

A notice to those who feel that Stephen King has lost his magic touch: Desperation is the genuine goods. The ensemble cast of ordinary Americans thrown together by chance, including a disgruntled alcoholic writer and a child who is wise beyond his years, may be a bit too familiar. But the nearly deserted Nevada mining town with an enormous haunted mine pit and an abandoned movie theatre where the survivors hang out makes for a striking battleground, and the grisly action rarely flags. Best of all, though, are the characters of Tak, the ancient body-hopping evil who emerges from the mine, and of "God"--whom the New York Times describes as "the edgiest creation in Desperation. Remote, isolated, ironic, shrouded behind disguises, perhaps 'another legendary shadow,' this deity forms a sly foil, and an icy mirror, to Tak."

Reviews From Our Customers

Can you say King's best work?

I am so glad i read this book! it was great. the writing style was awesome, and best of all, there was action on every page, which i was not expecting since King wrote it. great though. pretty gory and scary. i loved it.

The ABC mini series comes to DVD via Lion Gate Films July 12, 2005.

TAK! ...The journey to Desperation ...TAK!

Desperation, Nevada is a town unlike many other in the state, small, community oriented, with 99% of the populace depending on the success of the local mine for their economy.

What is different, is that in the bottom of this mine an evil force has risen, and killed off nearly the entire town. "TAK"
It's horrific nature so great that it's host body is literally obliterated within hours after he enters them. "TAK" later takes on a cop's body and begins to haul people into the county jail on erroneous charges. It is here where people begin to realize that they are not just dealing with a small town jerk-off power hungry cop, but something much more sinister.

A cast of characters arises as King lays out the various people you would find on any given highway. The burned out novelist riding a harley, the vacationing family, The rock and roll roadie, the rebel teenage girl, plus many more come together to try and understand their situation while at the same time figure out how to escape thier desert nightmare.

Escape is not easy as TAK can summon armies of coyotes, spiders, and rattlesnakes to do his bidding. TAK has to continue to find hosts which he turns into homicidal maniacs to do his bidding till their bodies are used to the max.

Can they stop this evil menace and send it back where they came from? Or will they end up a host for the thing from the mine that has brought terror upon them?

A riveting, complex, scary, suspenseful story in which the reader has a hard time putting the book down. I enjoyed this novel a great deal and have since read it's sister companion, "The Regulators", which also feature some of the same characters. I hope you find this book to your liking as well, so be careful when pulled over on a lonely highway by a cop who appears a bit out of the ordinary and mixes in hateful threats and "TAK" conversing with you.

-Enjoy!

A little Familiar and yet not

I have just finished reading this book, and I have to say it is one of my favorite Stephen King books of all time. It is highly suspensful, with amazing lovable good guys, and one of Stephen Kings best villians to date, even better then Randall Flagg. My only problem with it is that it is a little preachy, but thats the whole point of the story so I guess it has to be. It doesn't take away the great fun. And the begining chapters are probably the best in the book. Well, I think that is all that needs to be said. NUFF SAID

THE GREAT ETNEBOB HAS SPOKEN
