Hardcover Description

Medication? Maybe. Marry the right person and find the right job? A must if you are an adult suffering from ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). So say psychiatrists Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey, authors of the influential Driven to Distraction, published in 1994. In their new book, Delivered from Distraction, Hallowell and Ratey survey the current medical landscape concerning ADD, combining their own clinical observations with the latest research to paint a much more complex and, in many ways, positive picture of the condition than has generally been presented.

Hallowell and Ratey embrace the idea that success in life comes more from playing to your strengths than overcoming your weaknesses. In the case of a person with ADD (child or adult), these strengths often include unusually high levels of creativity, charisma, intelligence, and energy. The authors insist that, while medication and other treatments can sometimes work wonders in reducing limitations, surrounding yourself with people who promote these positive traits, be they in your personal or professional life, is the single most important element to living well with ADD. As both Hallowell and Ratey are not only experts in the field, but "ADDers" themselves, the tips and stories they share for how to do so are fresh, funny, and far more helpful than tired arguments over drugs verse no drugs or whether there’s even such a thing as ADD at all.--Patrick Jennings

Reviews From Our Customers

Great Book really made me feel normal again

I loved this book of course I didn't read it all in one sitting but like you I have ADD. It validated my feeling about myself and a diagnosis of ADD. I gave it to my mom and she looks at me and goes "ok, that explains so much." I really feel like she understands how my brain works. This book is for you and anyone who loves you and anyone you want to understand you. I'm giving it to my sister who is very opposite of me type A, my way is the best way, now she will try understand how I work. I now feel normal because I understand why I do things different from other people. I just thought I was weird but I'm not I'm just more creative

Great Book - Updated Information

I read this book immediately following Driven to Distraction by the same authors. Both have had great impact of my understanding of ADD, and especially understanding the long-term impact of untreated ADD.

Would highly recommend both books, plus ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life - it's amazing.

Celebrate Children with ADHD!

We offer many thanks to Edward Hallowell for providing valuable insight into children and adults with ADD, ADHD and non-traditional learning styles. Dr. Hallowell busts open many of the myths about ADHD and offers proactive, hopeful solutions to parents.

This philosophy is the foundation of our own unique approach called Celebrate!ADHD...in which we restore a child's confidence, purpose and joy by focusing on the child's natural gifts, talents and passions. www.celebrateADHD.com

Like Dr. Hallowell, we believe that children with ADHD have many superior qualities that offer them unique advantages versus other children. The key is to take stock of their unique qualities, turn negatives into positives and focus their energy on their strengths. Above all, let's enjoy our children.

Delivered from Distraction is a very insightful book that will give you lots of tips on how to better celebrate and enjoy your child.
