Hardcover Description

Someone was bound to go after Michael Moore eventually and this book holds nothing back. An immensely popular figure to political left-wingers, Michael Moore presents himself as a regular working-class guy in a baseball cap with the courage to take some rich and powerful folks to task for their corrupt and deceitful ways. David T. Hardy and Jason Clarke say this populist, muckraker image is pure whitewash. Believing that this charade has gone on for too long, and done too much damage to the U.S., they have written this book to expose Moore as narcissistic and irresponsible and his body of work "as manipulative as totalitarian propaganda." To prove their point, they pick apart Moore's books and movies to illustrate how he is consistently manipulative, dishonest, and, at times, simply absurd. They show how he altered the timeline of Roger and Me in order to unfairly blame things on General Motors that happened before their layoffs, not as a result of them. Regarding Bowling for Columbine, the authors explain how he took quotes out of context and reassembled them to give the impression that people made speeches they did not make---most famously his interview with Charlton Heston, then president of the NRA. They also illustrate how Moore manipulated statistics in his books Dude, Where’s My Country and Stupid White Men to fit his theories, making some truly outrageous claims in the process. The authors have certainly done their homework, and it's impossible to view Moore's work the same way after reading this book. "How does a man with so many contradictions manage to blind his enormous trove of followers to how hypocritical he really is? How does he get away with it?" they ask. If the authors have their way, he won't much longer. Now that Moore has joined the ranks of the rich and powerful, Hardy and Clarke have engaged in bit of muckraking of their own. --Shawn Carkonen

Reviews From Our Customers

Liberals stoop to some real low tactics

I decided to post this because of something I just noticed. I previously wrote a review of Barry Bonds: Baseball's Superman, written by my friend Steven Travers, so I checked it out. I was amazed to see all kinds of negative reviews of his book, which sold well and even won an award, I think. Then I read these reviews further and discovered that none of it had anything to do with Steve's book. It turns out Steve writes reviews of books and movies on Amazon himself. Like me, he is pretty conservative. He wrote some reviews about Michael Moore, books and documentaries by him, a few about him, etc., including this book.

Anyway, the stuff Travs wrote about Moore was not real flattering of Moore, but it looked to be researched and was basically within the framework of the stuff a lot of people write and say about Moore, who is pretty controversial either way you cut the mustard. It turns out somebody turned the Moore supporters on to Steve, how I'm not sure, but they all decided to give a bunch of negative, fake reviews of Barry Bonds: Baseball's Superman. Lord, I could not believe some of the stuff people were saying about my friend. Terrible reviews. One stars. Calling him a liar, claiming all kinds of untruths about him, and the Bonds book had nothing to do with politics. One clown apparently wrote more than one of the reviews, and when I looked at other reviews I saw this dingleberry shadowing Steve's reviews, sort of the way a kid repeats what another kid says on a schoolyard. The guy looks like he has several aliases or something and gives Steve "unhelpful" votes even when Steve gives the best review in the lot.

Is this the way the left operates? These people just hide and do hit-and'runs. Steve puts his name and email address up there like a man. If you like him or not, and he's opinionated so you might not like him, you know who he is and what he stands for. These people are cowards. At least Moore gives his real name, but he's got a big payoff. He's a millionaire, so it's worth it. These people used to have all the power in this country, but not anymore. The way they deal with their lack of popularity is so telling. Just shut up or, if you have anything to say, be up front about it.

The mainstream media wants us to believe they are just reporting the news, but it is filled with bias. Conservatives stand right up and identify themselves and say, "Here I am, this is who I am, agree or disagree." Judging from recent elections and ratings, most people agree.

Laughing at Moore's Sheep reviewing this book

All the "readers" (ha ha!) giving this book 1 star without anything to back it up besides "Michael Rulez!" make me laugh. That's why you'll never win the upcoming election.
Just for fun, lets review some things Moore has said:
-(After Sept 11th) He lamented the attack because "if you were doing it to get back at Bush, you attacked people in places that didn't even vote for him!" So if 3,000 republicans had died, Moore presumably would've been happy with that.
-(In England) If the people on the hijacked planes had been "blacks instead of pampered whites, they would've beaten the hijackers." - Stunning. He not only ignores the fact that the hijack intended for the White House WAS foiled by passengers who fought back, he sneaks in a subtle opinion that blacks were more prone to violence, and better at it than whites. Oh, such a celebration of diversity!
-(In Germany) Said that Americans "were the stupidest people on the planet" and wondered in a German newspaper if "it's right that the biggest country in the worls should be run by such stupid people"

And Mikey supporters, don't reflexively say I'm lying. Do some basic research before you defend your hero, who puts you down at every turn and despises you and still profits off you and laughs all the way to the bank.

In the meantime, open your mind: moorewatch.com ... michaelmoorehatesamerica.com .... revoketheoscar.com

And Mr. Moore.....if you see this review, go ahead and use your legal response team to sue me. I dare you. I'll see you in court.

This book says what I've thought for a long time!!

To say it's easy to take potshots at Michael Moore is to state the obvious. He makes it almost too easy, but what potshots often lack is substance. With that said, this book makes up for the lack of substance that hurts many criticisms of Michael Moore. A few of the reviews on this site claim that there are no facts in this book, no references or accounts of events to back up the authors' claims. That simply isn't true. Almost everything is backed up. (I say "almost everything" because there are some op-ed pieces included, and op-ed pieces don't have to be based in fact. Hence the reason they're called op-ed.) I know that the primary audience for this book is people who hate Moore, but I think people who love and adore the director would be the ones best served by this book. They could read how their icon really lives and how he manipulates the medium that has made him famous. They may not like what they read, but they would at least see that "the emperor has no clothes." Of course, people who despise Moore and his "work" (yes, I am one of them) will find themselves pumping their fists in the air, saying "I told you so" a lot. It will also give them ammunition to hurl at Moore's admirers. The best thing about this book is that it covers his entire career; it wasn't something just thrown together to combat Farenheit 9/11. That lends it even more weight because there is as much criticism of Roger and Me as there is of Bowling for Columbine or his books. In all honesty, this book didn't make me think less of Moore, but I didn't expect that to happen. It just helped me justify my dislike of him and what he calls "art."
