Reviews From Our Customers

The Miserable Mill, The Austere Academy, The Ersatz Elevator

The first thing you should know about the Unfortunate Events books is that they are not happy books. If you like happy books with happy endings than you should NOT read these books unless you are prepared and ready. These books are not bad, they are just sad. There are some good things: sometimes Sunny, (one of the main characters) talks, and she is a baby. She usually talks in shrikes, and the book will explain what she is saying. She will say funny things sometimes. The other main characters are Klaus, and Violet. The 3 of them make plans (they make plans on how to escape from Count Olaf the villan) and each have something they are good at. Now, I will explain the books.

#4 The Miserable Mill:
Violet, Klaus, and Sunny have to go work at a lumbermill. They are safe from Olaf for some of the book....

#5 The Austere Academy:
Violet, Klaus, and Sunny go to live at a boarding school. At first there is no sign of Olaf untill the school gets a new gym teacher....

#6 The Ersatz Elevator:
(Ersatz is a word witch here means "something pretending to be something else") Violet, Klaus, and Sunny go to live in an apartment with the Squalors. Everything is normal untill an auctioneer comes....

Overall, if you like happy books, don't get these books.

these books don't talk down to kids

I've read on the few of the reviews that these books are not recommended for "very young" children. I'd agree that kids under the age of 5 or so might not be interested, but mine are 7 and 8 and LOVE these books. The 7 year old still needs quite a bit of help with the bigger words, but both kids love to have the books read to them and it's fun reading for a grownup.
